What Is Spray Foam Insulation?
Spray foam insulation is a two-component mixture that expands on contact to fill cavities, seal gaps, and create a continuous thermal and air barrier. It's applied as a liquid and expands to fill every crack, crevice, and void — something no other insulation type can match.
Open-Cell Spray Foam
Open-cell foam is lighter, more flexible, and provides excellent sound dampening. It expands significantly, making it ideal for interior walls, attics, and cathedral ceilings. While it has a lower R-value per inch than closed-cell (approximately R-3.7/inch), its expansion and air-sealing properties make it extremely effective for most residential applications.
Closed-Cell Spray Foam
Closed-cell foam is denser, stronger, and provides a higher R-value per inch (approximately R-6.5/inch). It also acts as a vapor barrier and adds structural rigidity. Ideal for crawl spaces, rim joists, exterior walls, and areas prone to moisture exposure.
Benefits of Spray Foam
- Superior air sealing: Fills every gap and crack, eliminating drafts and air infiltration
- Highest R-value per inch: More thermal resistance in less space
- Moisture control: Closed-cell foam acts as a vapor barrier
- Structural strength: Closed-cell adds racking strength to walls
- Long lifespan: Doesn't settle, sag, or degrade over time
- Energy savings: Typically reduces heating and cooling costs by 30-50%
Best Applications
- Attic insulation (especially cathedral ceilings and roof decks)
- Crawl spaces and basements
- Rim joists and band boards
- Exterior walls (new construction and renovation)
- Commercial buildings and metal structures
